Originally wedding favours were first used in Italy. These romantic Italian lovers would send their guests home with a small gift called a Bonbonniere. Bonbonniere’s were made out of porcelain and formed a box that contained delights made from sugar. That is why in modern times wedding couples often give the gift of Sugared Almonds to their guests – in keeping with history. Five almonds are given and are said to represented happiness, wealth, health, fertility and longevity.
It was also considered good luck to give out favours and some couples still believe that this superstition holds true.
